A Thousand Paper Cranes of Hope

“Hope” by Emily Dickinson

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune–without the words,

And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

In my culture, birds are always good Feng Shui–birds could fly, and therefore they can reach heavens. To the Chinese, birds in general symbolizes inspiration and renewal. I’m wearing the Marcella necklace and earring sets with peacock motif from Donna Flora to serve as a talisman of abundance and good luck.

Amelie Knelstrom of {vespertine} created these papercranes product for her contribution to the Love Donna Flora! fundraising effort. It is based on the Japanese legend of senbazuru: fold a thousand tsuru (cranes) and your wish will be granted by a crane. The papercranes you see lined up on the shelf are not sold individually, it is part of a wearable prop for the poses {vespertine} put out for the event. I thought I’d rezz some out and line them up carefully…I didn’t have space for a thousand cranes, but I hope a thousand of us will buy these and be part of Squinternet’s hope.

Love Donna Flora! is a Second Life community fund raising event to support Squinternet Larnia’s (founder of Donna Flora store) battle with breast cancer. Read more about it here.

You don’t need to be an SL Resident to donate. If any of my RL (real life) followers would like to donate to Squinternet Larnia, you can do so through PayPal. Cajsa Lilliehook has provided a transparency statement on the official Love Donna Flora! blog, and you can view yourself how the finances from the fundraising will be disbursed. For the more cynical amongst us, medical document scans are also provided on that page. Financial statements are available in the Reports page.

The strength of one can be buoyed up by the support of many. If anyone have doubts whether shopping inworld can have any real impact on another person’s wellbeing, here are some stats for you: Daniel Voyager reported that the recent Hair Fair 2013, an annual event that raise funds for Wigs for Kids by selling virtual hair (the largest selling goods in SL), raised a grand total of L$4,157,129. In RL money, this is equal to US$16,810. Additionally, SL Relay for Life has surpassed two million dollars for the American Cancer Society since 2005.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind us all that cancer does not discriminate.

Awareness and regular check-ups are our first line of defence against breast cancer. Don’t wait to take care of yourself.
